How much does it cost to hire a bus in Barcelona?

Bus hire cost in Barcelona starts from the vehicle, not from the number of passengers. A transfer between the airport and the city is €80 in the V-Class, €200 in the Sprinter and €320 in the minibus or the coach. A driver at your disposal for 8 hours is €630, €785, €900 and €900. Every price is in euros, includes VAT and is for the whole vehicle with its driver.

Search results for this question are full of price lists with seat ranges, day rates and “from” prices. My table is simpler: four vehicles and one price per vehicle for each service. What are all the fixed prices for a bus in Barcelona?

The table has the transfers, the hourly prices and the day trips in one place. Prices include VAT. The airport row also applies to the cruise port: the Port of Barcelona terminals to or from Barcelona or the airport cost exactly the same.

The seat count in the header is the limit of each vehicle. Add luggage to your headcount, and if you are not sure, send both and I suggest the smaller vehicle that still works.

What is the difference between a transfer price and an hourly price?

A transfer is a fixed price for the vehicle from A to B on a route in the table. Hourly hire is a driver at your disposal: the vehicle stays with the group, and the clock runs from the pick-up to the drop-off. The two are different services, and the figures are not interchangeable.

Choose the transfer when the group goes one way and the route is in the table: the airport to a hotel, the hotel to the port, a coach to Sitges. Choose hourly hire when the vehicle must wait, move between several stops or return the group at the end of the day. A day of sightseeing, a school visit or a wedding with a church and a venue is hourly by nature.

Hourly hire has a 6-hour minimum per day, with no maximum. If your day is longer than 8 hours, you take the 8-hour price and add the extra hours at the rate of your vehicle, shown in the “each additional hour” row. A day trip that uses the hourly rows is an estimate built from hours multiplied by the table, and it is never the same thing as a fixed transfer.

How do extra hours work in practice?

Take a group with a coach for a day that runs from 8:00 to 18:00. The day is 10 hours, so it is billed as the 8-hour price of the coach plus two extra hours at the hourly rate of the coach, both read straight from the table. The same sum with the Sprinter uses the Sprinter’s 8-hour price and its own, lower hourly rate. I give you the result in the quote, so there is no calculation on your side.

Three habits keep the extra hours low. Fix the return time before the day and share it with the group. Put the longest visit early, when the group is fresh and the queues are short. And tell the driver as soon as the programme slips, because one extra hour announced at midday is easier to plan than three announced at the gate.

The 6-hour minimum works the other way. A short programme still counts as 6 hours, so a half-day group gains nothing from cutting a visit by 20 minutes. Use the minimum as the time you have, and fit the programme into it.

Why is the minibus the same price as the coach?

In my table the minibus (up to 33 passengers) and the coach (up to 60) have the same price on every row. So the question for a group of 30 is not which vehicle is cheaper but which suits the group better. Choose the coach for the extra seats and the luggage space. Choose the minibus for narrow streets, a small hotel entrance or a destination where a shorter vehicle parks more easily. If you are in doubt, ask for both options, and I tell you which I would book.

The Sprinter is a different case. With up to 16 seats it is cheaper than the minibus on every row of the table, so a group of 14 does not need the larger vehicle. Check the luggage first: a full Sprinter with 16 large bags is tight, and I say so when I see the numbers. The 16-seater minibus page has the details of this size.

What changes a bus hire quote outside the table?

Anything not in the table is quoted on request: other destinations, other dates, several days and one-way trips outside the table. I do not publish a “from” price for them, because the right figure depends on the plan. What I look at when I quote is a short list, and it is the same list every bus operator uses:

• the route and the distance, including the return if the vehicle goes back empty
• the number of hours, from the first pick-up to the last drop-off
• the number of days, and whether the driver stays overnight
• the date, because some dates in Barcelona are busy for the whole city
• the number of passengers and the luggage, because they set the vehicle
• stops on the way, and the time the vehicle waits at each

Fixed prices make the first two points simple on the routes in the table. For the rest, the quote states what it covers in plain words, so there is nothing to find out on the day. If your plan changes after you confirm, I tell you what the change does to the price before I confirm it.

How long can a driver work, and why does it affect the price of a long day?

A long day with a bus has a legal limit on driving. The European Commission’s page on driving time and rest periods says that the daily driving period must not exceed 9 hours, with an extension to 10 hours twice a week, and that a break of at least 45 minutes is required after 4.5 hours of driving at the latest. The rules apply to passenger vehicles with 10 or more seats including the driver, which covers the Sprinter, the minibus and the coach but not the V-Class.

For a group, this is a planning point more than a price point. A programme with a long drive each way plus a full day at the destination can be too tight for one driver, and I say so before you confirm. A shorter route, an overnight stay or an earlier start often solves it. This is also why a long trip such as Andorra can be quoted differently if the group wants a long programme on the same day.

Which vehicle is the right one for my budget?

The smallest vehicle that fits the group is the cheapest one that works. Compare the table with your numbers:

• Up to 7 passengers: the V-Class has the lowest price on every row, and it feels like a private car with a driver. See the page on the Mercedes V-Class with driver.

Two small vehicles are not always cheaper than one large one. Two Sprinters need two drivers, and the group is split between two vehicles. For a class, a team or a wedding party, I recommend one vehicle when it fits, because the group arrives together.

What should a bus hire quote include so that you can compare it?

Prices from different companies are hard to compare when each one counts something different. Before you put two quotes side by side, ask the same six questions of both:

• Is the price for the whole vehicle or per person?
• How many hours does it cover, and what is each extra hour?
• Is VAT included, or added at the end?
• Does the driver wait during the visit, and is the waiting inside the hours?
• What happens if the programme runs late or the flight is delayed?
• Is the vehicle the one you asked for, or only the same seat count?

My answers are on this page. The price is for the vehicle, the hours are in the table, extra hours are charged at the hourly rate shown, VAT is included and the vehicle is the one in the quote. A flight delay is handled by telling me, and I adjust the pick-up where I can. A quote that cannot answer the six questions in writing is not ready to compare.

Be careful with very low prices as well. A price that looks lower often covers fewer hours, leaves VAT out or applies only to a smaller vehicle. The honest comparison is the same vehicle, the same hours and the same route, in euros with VAT, and then the price tells you something.

How much does it cost for a school, a team or a corporate group?

Schools, clubs and companies use the same table and the same logic, with a few habits of their own. A school trip is normally hourly hire with a pick-up at the gate, a wait during the visit and a return before a fixed time. The page on school trip coach hire shows how I plan these days. A team adds kit bags and a kick-off time. A company adds several flights, a hotel and a venue, and the airport row is usually the starting point.

For a congress or a fair, such as the MWC Barcelona, hotel shuttles repeat the same route many times, and the quote depends on the number of vehicles and the hours. These are quoted on request, and I need the dates and the daily schedule.

What do airport and cruise port transfers cost for a group?

The airport row is the simplest price in my table: €80, €200, €320 and €320 by vehicle, for one trip between El Prat and Barcelona. The cruise port is the same price, so a group that arrives by ship and leaves by plane pays the same for each trip. The airport itself lists the stops of group buses on its official bus information page, and the Port of Barcelona publishes passenger information for each terminal.

If your group arrives and leaves on different days, count two trips. If the vehicle also takes the group sightseeing between the two, use the hourly rows for the sightseeing part. How do I get an exact price for my group?

Send five things in the form, and I reply with the vehicle and the price:

1. the date and the pick-up place
2. the destination or the programme, with the times of each stop
3. the number of passengers, with children and adults
4. the luggage, equipment or ski gear
5. the time the group must be back
