How do I get from Barcelona airport to Girona with a group?

The simplest way for a group is one private vehicle from the terminal to Girona. Barcelona airport to Girona is 113 km and takes about 1 h 30 min without traffic, from Barcelona-El Prat airport to the city centre, and you can check the route on Google Maps.

Send the date, the flight and the Girona address in the quote form and I reply with the vehicle and the price. The service runs 24/7, so a late landing or an early departure does not change how it works.

Most people who search for this are not tourists with one backpack. They are football and basketball teams, conference delegates, a family reunion, a school group, or a party that has booked a house on the Costa Brava and lands at the wrong end of the region. The question behind the search is always the same: how does a leader move many people and many bags from one door to another without splitting the group? The rest of this page answers it in the order the questions usually arrive. If you want the full fleet first, my home page on bus hire in Barcelona shows it.

How far is Barcelona airport to Girona, and how long does the drive take?

The distance is 113 km to Girona city centre, and the drive takes about 1 h 30 min without traffic. That is the free-flow figure for the road, and I do not plan a booking around the best case.

What adds time in practice:

  • the exit from the airport area at peak hours, especially on a Friday afternoon or before a holiday
  • traffic on the ring roads around Barcelona before the road heads north
  • a comfort stop for a group, which on a full coach is usually 15 to 20 minutes once everyone is off and back on
  • the drop-off in Girona itself, where parts of the old town are narrow

For a coach with 40 or 50 people I tell the group leader to count roughly two hours from the kerb at the airport to the Girona stop, and to give the hotel a later check-in expectation rather than an earlier one. This is advice from how group transfers work, not a timetable promise.

Does the driver need a break on this route?

Yes, and the rules are simple. The European Commission states that a driver needs a break of at least 45 minutes after 4½ hours of driving, that daily driving is capped at 9 hours (10 hours twice a week) and that daily rest is at least 11 hours, with exceptions. These rules apply to a bus or coach with 10 or more seats including the driver, according to the Your Europe guide to road transport rules. That covers the Sprinter, the minibus and the coach, and it does not cover the V-Class.

The transfer itself fits well inside those limits. The rules matter when a group adds a long day around it: Girona in the morning, a second town in the afternoon, then the road back to Barcelona. In that case I plan the day with you, and if the driving or the working day becomes too long I say so before you confirm.

Is there a bus from Barcelona airport to Girona?

Yes, but it is a scheduled service run by another company, not by me. Aena’s page on how to get to Barcelona airport by bus lists the Sagalés Airport Line, line 602, which connects the airport with Girona and Figueres. It names the stops at Terminal 1 (floor 0, arrivals) and a ticket sales point at the technical block of Terminal 2B. Aena gives no frequencies on that page and sends you to the operator’s site, so I do not quote times.

A scheduled bus works for individual travellers who arrive near a departure. For a group it has four weak points:

  • it has fixed departures, so a group that lands in two flights or collects bags slowly can miss one
  • every passenger needs a ticket, and the group has to stay together at the stop
  • luggage space is shared with other passengers and was not planned for your sports bags or instrument cases
  • it stops at a bus station or a stop, not at your hotel, so the group still needs a way across town

A private vehicle changes all four. It leaves when your group is ready, it carries only your people, and it stops at the address you choose. If you arrive in the evening or at night, remember that scheduled departures follow the operator’s timetable while mine follow your flight.

Can you take the train from Barcelona airport to Girona?

Yes, in two steps. Aena lists the local train line R2 Nord among the ways to reach the airport, and the high-speed or long-distance train to Girona leaves from Barcelona Sants. Renfe states that AVE and Long Distance trains run from Barcelona Sants to Girona, and that the Girona station is in the middle of the city. For a person with a small bag this can be a clean way to travel.

For a group, the trouble is the change in the middle. A party of 25 with large cases has to get from the airport platform to Sants, queue for tickets or find seats together, carry bags up and down stairs at two stations and then walk or take taxis from the Girona station. The journey is also not door to door: Girona station is in the centre, but your hotel may not be.

If you want to compare, use the operator’s own sites for current fares and times. I do not publish rail times or prices because they change.

What about a taxi from Barcelona airport to Girona?

A taxi suits up to four people with normal luggage. Past that, a group needs several cars, which means several drivers to coordinate, several meeting points and several destinations to explain. The AMB taxi page is the place to start for taxis around Barcelona. I do not give a taxi fare for this route because the metered price depends on traffic and supplements, and a figure from a blog would be a guess.

Here is how the main options compare for a group:

Option Suits Main limit for a group
Scheduled bus (line 602) Individuals who match a departure Fixed times, one ticket each, shared luggage space
Train via Sants One or two travellers with light bags A change of station and a carry from Girona station
Taxi Up to four people Several cars for any larger party
Private Sprinter, minibus or coach Eight or more, teams, tours Needs a booking and a quote in advance

How much does a private Barcelona airport to Girona transfer cost?

It is quoted on request, VAT included, for the whole vehicle and not per person. The route is not in my fixed table, so I do not publish a figure, and I never mix an hourly price with a transfer price.

What I can state are the rows that exist. The airport to or from Barcelona costs €80 in the V-Class, €200 in the Sprinter and €320 in the minibus and in the coach. A driver at your disposal for 6 hours costs €470, €610, €685 and €685 respectively, and each additional hour is €80, €90, €110 and €110. These are for a different job, but they are useful if the vehicle will stay with the group in Girona or go on to the coast, because then the hourly rates apply with a 6-hour minimum per day. The price page shows the full table.

To get a quote you need to tell me:

  1. the date and the time of landing
  2. the flight number and the terminal
  3. the number of passengers and bags
  4. the address or hotel in Girona
  5. whether you need the return and when

Which vehicle fits the group?

Seats are one measure and bags are the other, so I start from both.

  • Up to 7 people: the Mercedes V-Class works for a family or a small business party. It is not a bus, and the EU driving-time rules above do not apply to it.
  • 8 to 16 people: the Sprinter minibus holds up to 16 passengers. The Sprinter page explains how I use it.
  • 17 to 33 people: the minibus seats up to 33, which suits a club, a class or a mid-size tour. There is more on the 30-seater minibus page.
  • 34 to 60 people: the coach seats up to 60, for a whole team with staff or a full tour group.

If the group travels with a lot of luggage, go up one size. A football squad with kit bags can fill a minibus at 20 people, and a family with ski or golf gear fills a Sprinter faster than its seat count suggests. Tell me what the group carries in the form, and I tell you if a larger vehicle is safer.

Is Barcelona airport to Girona the same as Barcelona airport to Girona airport?

No, and the two are often mixed up. Girona has its own airport, Girona-Costa Brava, and some groups fly into one airport and out of the other. Aena says that Girona-Costa Brava airport is served by bus lines to Girona and Barcelona and that a taxi stand is available at the airport.

If your ticket says Barcelona and your hotel is in Girona city, this is the page you want. If you land in Girona and need to go to Barcelona, read Girona airport to Barcelona. I can also drive a group between the two airports on request, for example when a team flies in on one carrier and flies out on another. Quote it as a transfer with both flight times.

Where in Girona can the vehicle stop?

This matters more in Girona than in most cities. The old town has lanes that are not made for a coach, so the best stop is usually at the edge of the old town, near the hotel or the meeting point, and the group walks the last stretch. The Costa Brava tourism site’s page on Girona describes the labyrinthine streets of the old Jewish quarter, the city walls, the cathedral with its immense nave and the colourful houses and the bridge over the Onyar river. Those are the places a group wants to walk through, and none of them is a place to park a coach.

Send me the hotel name and, if you know it, the entrance you want. I agree the stopping point with you before the day, and I do not promise a door that a large vehicle may not be able to reach. If the group has people who cannot walk far, tell me, and I plan the closest legal stop.

What should a group prepare before the transfer?

A few things save the most time:

  • The landing time. I set the pick-up from the time your flight is due to land and ask you to tell me about changes. A group of 30 needs longer to collect bags than a couple.
  • A named contact. One person in the group has a phone that works in Spain, and I have the number.
  • The luggage count. Give an honest figure, including sports bags, instrument cases and pushchairs.
  • The return. If the group comes back to the airport after a few days, ask for both directions in one quote.
  • Mixed arrivals. If the group lands on two flights, tell me, and I plan the vehicle so that nobody waits without information.

For a school or sports party, add the leader’s name and the number of adults. My page on sports team bus hire explains how I handle squads and kit.

Is Girona worth the trip, and what comes next?

It is a compact old town with a cathedral, a Jewish quarter and the river houses that appear in most photos of the city, and a regular stop on Catalonia itineraries. Many groups arrive in Barcelona, move on to Girona for a night or two and then go to the coast.

From Girona the road continues to Figueres and the Dalí Theatre-Museum, which has its own official site, and my page on Figueres and the Dalí Museum by bus covers that leg. For the beaches and the villages, read Costa Brava bus hire. If the group wants to start from the city instead of the airport, Barcelona to Girona by minibus is the matching page.

For a trip that starts at the airport and ends the same day, I do not suggest squeezing Girona in at the end of a long flight. A transfer to the hotel on arrival and a day out later is easier on everyone, and I can quote the day by the hour once the plan is clear.

How to book

  1. Open the contact page or use the quote form below.
  2. Enter the date, the flight number, the terminal and the Girona address.
  3. Add the number of passengers and bags.
  4. Say whether you need a return, and when.
  5. I reply by e-mail or WhatsApp with the vehicle I suggest and a quote that includes VAT.

If you are unsure which vehicle fits, ask in the form and I explain the choice. If the group lands at Barcelona and flies home from Girona, or the reverse, say so and I quote it as one job.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Girona from Barcelona airport?

It is 113 km by road from Barcelona-El Prat to the centre of Girona, about 1 h 30 min without traffic. Girona's own airport is a different place, and I can also drive a group between the two airports on request.

How do I get from Barcelona airport to Girona?

A single traveller can use a scheduled bus or a train via Barcelona. A group with luggage is better served by one private vehicle that loads the bags once at the terminal and stops where you choose in Girona. I quote it by vehicle, not per seat.

Is there a direct bus from Barcelona airport to Girona?

Aena lists the Sagalés Airport Line, line 602, between Barcelona airport, Girona and Figueres, with a stop at Terminal 1 arrivals. Other companies run it and set the timetable, so check their site. A private transfer is my service for groups.

How much is a transfer from Barcelona airport to Girona?

It is quoted on request, VAT included, because the price depends on the vehicle, the date, the time and whether you need a return. I do not give a figure without those details, and I do not publish a from price.

What is the best way to travel from Barcelona to Girona?

For one or two people with light bags, the train is simple. For a group of eight or more with luggage, a private Sprinter, minibus or coach is usually less effort than splitting across taxis or changing trains with cases.

Is Girona worth visiting?

Yes, if the group likes old towns on foot. The Costa Brava tourism site names the cathedral, the old Jewish quarter, the city walls and the colourful houses on the Onyar river among the main sights. Many groups pair it with the Costa Brava.

Can a 50-seat coach collect a group at Barcelona airport and go to Girona?

Yes. The coach seats up to 60 passengers. Send the flight, the number of people, the bags and the Girona address through the form and I quote the vehicle.
