How much is a Barcelona to Montserrat minibus for a group?
One way from central Barcelona the prices are €135 for the V-Class (up to 7 passengers), €410 for the Sprinter minibus (up to 16), €495 for the minibus (up to 33) and €495 for the coach (up to 60). Prices include VAT and are for the whole vehicle. A Barcelona to Montserrat minibus covers 60 km in about 1 h without traffic, and you can check the route on Google Maps.
Send the date, the pick-up address and the head count in the quote form below and I reply with the vehicle. My home page on bus hire in Barcelona shows the full fleet.
A one-way fare is half of the picture, because a group rarely wants to be dropped and forgotten. Most want the driver to wait. The next section prices that.
What does a day trip to Montserrat cost when the driver waits?
When the vehicle stays with the group, the job is priced by the hour. Hire by the hour has a 6-hour minimum per day, and a typical Montserrat visit is a round trip of 1 h each way plus 3 hours on the mountain. That adds up to 5 hours, which the minimum rounds up to 6 hours of hire. The estimate is:
- V-Class: €470
- Sprinter: €610
- Minibus: €685
- Coach: €685
VAT is included. If the group stays longer, extra hours are charged at the hourly rate, and the price page lists every row for every vehicle.
The two numbers answer different questions. The one-way price is for a group that arranges its own way back, for example by train, or that is going on to another city. The day-trip estimate is for a group that wants one vehicle all day. When a group of 25 compares them, the day-trip figure for the minibus is not double the one-way figure, because you are paying for the driver’s time, not for a second drive. I would ask which of the two the group actually needs before comparing prices at all.
How long does it take to get from Barcelona to Montserrat by minibus?
About 1 h without traffic over 60 km. That is the free-flow time from Plaça de Catalunya to the monastery. The real time depends on the hour you leave: the exit from Barcelona at the start of the day and on Friday afternoons is where minutes go missing, and the mountain road is the final stretch.
For a school or a church group I plan the departure on the basis of a latest arrival at the top, not an earliest departure. If the group has a service or a ticket time at Montserrat, the clock starts there. Subtract the drive, add a margin and a comfort stop, then add the time it takes a full vehicle to board in a city street. The result is the pick-up time I put in the quote.
Is a minibus better than the train, rack railway or scheduled coach?
For a group, usually yes, but the other options are good for smaller parties and worth knowing. Here is how they compare, using what the Montserrat visitor site publishes.
| Option | Starts at | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private minibus or coach | Your address in Barcelona | Leaves when you are ready; driver can wait | Groups of 8 to 60 |
| FGC train plus rack railway | Plaça Espanya | Trains hourly; rack railway every 20 min | Individuals and couples |
| R5 train plus cable car | Barcelona (R5 line) | Cable car every 15 min | Small parties without bags |
| Scheduled coach (Autocars Julià) | Viriat Street, next to Sants station | Fixed departure and return | Individuals who want a single seat |
The Montserrat visitor site says that FGC trains to Montserrat leave from Barcelona-Plaça Espanya station, hourly from 08:26, and that the rack railway covers 5 km from Monistrol de Montserrat to the monastery in about 15 minutes, with departures from Monistrol Vila every 20 minutes. The R5 line (Barcelona-Manresa) connects with the cable car and rack railway stations. Its cable car page says the cable car departs every 15 minutes and takes 5 minutes to climb 1,350 metres.
On the road page, the site lists the Autocars Julià coach: it leaves from Viriat Street, next to Sants station, at 9:15 in the morning, with a return from Montserrat at 5 pm from October to May and 6 pm from June to September. I do not quote the fare or promise the timetable, which belongs to that operator.
These services are fine for a single traveller. Their limits for a group are the same each time: a fixed departure, a ticket per person, and a group that has to move through a station together with its bags. A private minibus changes that to one address, one driver and one price.
Which vehicle suits a group going to Montserrat?
The head count decides, then the baggage.
- A small family or a few pilgrims fit the V-Class with driver, up to 7 passengers.
- A class of 14 pupils and two teachers fills a Sprinter minibus exactly. For a trip with backpacks and lunch bags I would consider the next size up.
- A year group or a mid-size tour fits the 33-seat minibus, which I list in the 30-seater minibus page.
- A full party of up to 60 goes by coach.
For a day trip, bags are lighter than for an airport transfer, but they are not nothing: coats, lunch boxes, cameras and a change of shoes add up. A vehicle that is full to the last seat is less comfortable on a mountain road than one with a few seats spare, and travel sickness is easier to manage when people can move.
What can a group do at Montserrat, and what are the opening hours?
The visit is shaped by what the group wants to do. The usual choices are the basilica, a short walk, the museum, a meal and free time. The Montserrat site gives the basilica’s opening hours as 7:00 to 20:00 and the Museum of Montserrat from 10:00 to 17:45, and the full list is on its opening hours page. Check it again close to the date, because hours change.
Some services follow set times, and the Escolania, the boys’ choir, has its own information page on the site. If the group’s wish is to attend a service, the group leader should confirm the time with the monastery and send me the arrival time you need.
For travel agencies and group organisers, the site has a section for travel agencies, where agents can request a quote and book accommodation after registering, and where it describes a central reservations office. Anything inside the monastery is arranged with the site; I take the group there and back.
Where does the minibus park at Montserrat?
The driver takes the group to the monastery area and agrees the meeting point with the group leader. On parking, the site states that the Montserrat Mountain Trust provides attended car parking and that car park capacity is limited. The free car park at the Monistrol station, where the rack railway starts, has 900 spaces for cars and coaches according to the same site.
I do not promise a specific bay, because arrangements on the mountain are set by the site and can change on the day. What I do is agree three things with the group leader before departure: where the group leaves the vehicle, where it meets again and how the driver and the leader reach each other by phone.
Groups that visit Montserrat
School trips
Schools book Montserrat as a cultural or nature day. I ask for the exact number of pupils and adults, the pick-up address and the time the school must be back. The ratio of teachers to pupils is the school’s decision; my job is the vehicle and the schedule. More on this is on the school and sport team bus hire page.
Pilgrim and church groups
Montserrat is a place of pilgrimage, and parish and church groups come in numbers. For these groups timing around services matters. Ask the monastery for the times of the services you want to attend and tell me the arrival time you need.
Tour groups and families
Travel agencies and tour leaders use the route as a half-day or full-day excursion, sometimes combined with a stop on the way back. A family of six or seven often prefers the V-Class, which feels like a private car with a driver.
From the airport
Some groups go straight from the terminal to the mountain. The Barcelona airport to Montserrat page covers that case, with the 56 km airport run and the meeting points.
What do the EU driving-time rules mean for the day?
A day trip to Montserrat is short, but the rules still shape the day when the programme is long. The European Commission sets a limit of 9 hours of driving a day, which can go to 10 hours twice a week, and a break of at least 45 minutes no later than after 4.5 hours of driving. These rules apply to passenger vehicles with 10 or more seats including the driver, so to the Sprinter, minibus and coach but not to the V-Class.
A return trip to Montserrat uses about 2 hours of driving. It is a problem only when the day adds a second excursion, a long transfer on either side or an evening run to the coast. If the plan is full, tell me, and I plan the hours with the break in mind.
Can I combine Montserrat with another stop?
Yes, and the combination decides the price more than the distance does. A second stop turns the job into a longer hire by the hour: the driver stays with the group, and extra hours beyond the minimum are charged at the hourly rate. The common pairs are:
- Montserrat in the morning, then a lunch in the countryside or back in Barcelona
- Montserrat, then a winery or a coastal town on the way back
- Montserrat in the morning and Sitges in the evening, on the Barcelona to Sitges minibus route
Tell me the places and the times and I quote the whole day. For a group that wants Barcelona itself as part of the programme, my private sightseeing bus page shows how I plan a city day.
What should the group leader prepare?
I suggest this order of questions before you write to me:
- What time must the group be on the mountain?
- How long will it stay, including lunch?
- Where should the vehicle wait, and how will the driver reach the group leader?
- Is there a second stop on the way back, for example a hotel or a restaurant?
Montserrat is on a mountain, with slopes and steps, and the weather can differ from the city. Tell me if anyone needs step-free access or extra time. The official visitor site is the place to check what is open and how to move around once you are there. Spring and autumn school-trip dates and the weekends around public holidays are the first to fill, so send the request as soon as the date is fixed. If the headcount is not final, send a range and confirm it later.
How to book
- Open the quote form below or the contact page.
- Enter the date, the pick-up place in Barcelona and the departure time.
- Add the number of passengers and say whether the driver should wait.
- Tell me the return time or the time the group wants to leave the mountain.
- I reply by e-mail or WhatsApp with the vehicle I suggest and the price, VAT included.
The service runs 24/7, so an early start for a morning service at the monastery is a normal request.
