How do you get from Girona airport to Barcelona with a group?

The simplest way for a group is one private vehicle from the terminal to the Barcelona address. Girona airport to Barcelona is 97 km and takes about 1 h 20 min without traffic, from Girona-Costa Brava airport to Plaça de Catalunya, and you can check the route on Google Maps.

Send the flight, the number of passengers and the Barcelona address in the quote form and I reply with the vehicle and the price. If you want to see the whole fleet first, my home page on bus hire in Barcelona lists it.

Many groups that land at Girona are heading for Barcelona: a cruise party joining a ship, a team with a match or a training camp, a conference delegation, a school trip, or a family whose cheap flight went to the other airport. The problem is the same each time. A group of 20 with suitcases does not fit well into a system built for individual passengers, and the airport is not in the city. This page covers the options in the order the questions usually arrive.

How far is Girona airport from Barcelona, and how long does the drive take?

The distance is 97 km to central Barcelona, and the drive takes about 1 h 20 min without traffic. The figure is the free-flow time to Plaça de Catalunya, and I do not plan a booking around the best case.

What adds time:

  • traffic on the approach to Barcelona on weekday mornings and on Friday and Sunday afternoons
  • the last kilometres in the city, where the stop for a large vehicle may be some way from the door
  • the time the group takes to clear baggage reclaim and reach the vehicle, which grows with the size of the party
  • a comfort stop, which a full coach usually needs

A Saturday midday arrival normally runs more smoothly than a Monday at 8:00. For a coach I tell the leader to plan about an hour and a half on the road plus a margin for the stop in the city.

Do the driving-time rules affect this transfer?

Not on its own, but they matter for a long day around it. The European Commission sets a break of at least 45 minutes after 4½ hours of driving, a daily driving limit of 9 hours (10 hours twice a week) and a daily rest of at least 11 hours, with exceptions. According to Your Europe, the rules apply to a bus or coach with 10 or more seats including the driver. That covers the Sprinter, the minibus and the coach. It does not cover the V-Class.

A single Girona airport to Barcelona run is well within the limits. When the same driver also does an early start, a Barcelona sightseeing day and a long run back, I plan the working day with you and tell you if it does not fit.

Is there a direct bus from Girona airport to Barcelona?

Yes. Aena’s page on how to reach Girona-Costa Brava airport by bus lists two Sagalés lines to Barcelona. One goes to Barcelona Estació del Nord, next to the Arc de Triomf, with departures approximately 20 to 25 minutes after each flight arrives. The other connects the airport with terminals 1 and 2 of Barcelona-El Prat. Aena sends travellers to the operator for timetables and prices.

On its own site, Sagalés Airport Line lists a Girona airport to Barcelona city centre fare of €22.00 and a Girona airport to Barcelona airport fare of €25.50, at the time I read it. Fares change, so check the page before you travel.

For a single traveller that is a good deal. For a group, I see five reasons to book a private vehicle instead:

  • Seats. A party of 30 cannot be sure of 30 seats on one departure.
  • Luggage. Space on a scheduled bus is shared, and a team’s kit bags or a school’s trunks are not part of the plan.
  • Late flights. If your plane lands late, the departure you aimed for may have gone.
  • The last stretch. The Estació del Nord is a station, not your hotel, and a group still needs to cross the city.
  • Splitting up. One late passenger holds nobody back on a private vehicle, but on a scheduled bus the group may divide between departures.

Can you take the train from Girona airport to Barcelona?

Not directly. Aena’s Girona-Costa Brava airport page lists three ways to get to the airport: car, bus and taxi. There is no rail option on it. To use the train you first need to reach Girona city, and then take a train from the Girona station, which Renfe places in the middle of the city. Renfe runs AVE and Long Distance trains on the route.

The result is three legs: the airport to Girona, the train, and then Barcelona’s own transport to the hotel. That works for one or two people with a cabin bag. It does not work well for a group with suitcases, because each leg needs bags lifted and a headcount repeated. I do not give rail times or fares here because the operators change them.

What about a taxi from Girona airport to Barcelona?

A taxi suits up to four people with moderate luggage. Aena’s taxi page for Girona airport explains that taxis at the official stand use a taximeter for trips to towns in the province and to Barcelona, that the price shown on the meter does not include supplements, and that luggage is carried free of charge only if it fits in the boot or the roof box. I do not quote a taxi fare, because it depends on the meter and the supplements.

For a group the arithmetic is simple even without a fare. A party of ten needs three cars, three drivers and three drop-off points. A private Sprinter takes ten people and their bags in one vehicle, and a minibus or coach scales that up.

What is the cheapest way from Girona airport to Barcelona?

For one person, the scheduled bus is usually the cheapest of the ways above, and the operator’s own page has the current fare. For a group, the honest comparison is the cost of one vehicle against the cost of many tickets, and the effort that comes with each.

Option Suits Watch for
Scheduled bus to Estació del Nord Individuals, light bags Fixed departures, one ticket each, then a transfer to the hotel
Scheduled bus to Barcelona airport Passengers continuing by air Not a route to the city centre
Train via Girona city One or two travellers Three legs, no rail stop at the airport
Taxi Up to four people Several cars for a larger party
Private Sprinter, minibus or coach Eight or more, teams, cruise groups Needs a booking and a quote in advance

I quote by vehicle, so the question for a group of 14 is not what one seat costs, but whether one Sprinter replaces a handful of tickets and a taxi. Send the numbers and I give you the price of the vehicle.

Can I go from Girona airport to the Barcelona cruise port?

Yes, and this is one of the most common reasons to book. A cruise group that lands at Girona has a fixed boarding time and no room for a missed connection. The cruise port to or from Barcelona is priced exactly like the airport row in my table, but a transfer from Girona airport is not in the table, so I quote it on request.

Tell me the ship, the boarding day and the time the terminal expects passengers, and I work back from that to the pick-up at Girona. The Port of Barcelona website is the place to confirm which terminal your ship uses. I never plan to the last minute, and I say so if the flight time is too tight for the boarding time. My page on the cruise port transfer explains the port side, and coach charter for cruises and travel agencies covers groups that book several vehicles.

How much does a private Girona airport to Barcelona transfer cost?

It is quoted on request, VAT included, for the whole vehicle and not per person. The route is not in my fixed table, so I do not publish a figure, and I do not mix an hourly rate with a transfer price.

Four things set the quote:

  1. the vehicle you need
  2. the date and the time of the pick-up
  3. whether it is one way or a return
  4. any stops on the way, such as a hotel or a lunch

The rows I can state are for other jobs. The airport to or from Barcelona costs €80 in the V-Class, €200 in the Sprinter and €320 in the minibus and in the coach. If you want the vehicle to stay with the group after the transfer, the hourly rates are €80, €90, €110 and €110 per hour, with a 6-hour minimum per day, and 6 hours costs €470, €610, €685 and €685. The price page shows the full table.

Which vehicle should I choose?

The seat count and the luggage together decide it.

  • Up to 7 people: the V-Class.
  • 8 to 16 people: the Sprinter minibus, up to 16 passengers, described on the Sprinter page.
  • 17 to 33 people: the minibus, up to 33 passengers.
  • 34 to 60 people: the coach, up to 60 passengers. The 50-seater coach page has the details.

If the group arrives with sports bags, instrument cases or cruise luggage, move one size up. A football team with kit can fill a minibus at 20 people. If you are unsure, send the number of bags in the form and I tell you which vehicle I would take.

What if the flight lands late at night?

The service runs 24/7, so a booked transfer works at any hour. I set the pick-up from the time your flight is due to land and ask you to send changes as they happen. A group that lands at midnight and arrives in Barcelona at 2 a.m. has no use for a timetable, and that is the case where a private vehicle makes the most sense.

If you plan to use the scheduled bus instead, remember that Aena describes the Estació del Nord line as leaving about 20 to 25 minutes after each flight arrives. Whether that covers every late flight is a question for the operator. Ask before you rely on it with a group.

What should a group send before the transfer?

Four items cut most of the follow-up questions:

  • the flight number and the terminal arrival time
  • the number of passengers and the number of large bags
  • the Barcelona address, and the entrance if the venue has one for coaches
  • a phone number that works in Spain for the day

If you are heading to a venue with restricted access, send the address and tell me if you know where a coach can stop. I check that a large vehicle can reach it, and I agree an alternative stop if it cannot. For a school or sports party, add the leader’s name and the number of adults. My page on school and sports team bus hire explains how I handle those bookings.

Is it better to fly into Barcelona airport instead?

Sometimes. If you can choose, check which airport your ticket names before you book, because the cost of the ticket is only one part of the trip. Barcelona’s own airport is a separate booking with its own fixed airport price, and I explain a group transfer from there on the airport bus hire page. If you are going north from Barcelona airport, read Barcelona airport to Girona. If the group is going on to the coast after Barcelona, see Costa Brava bus hire.

How to book

  1. Open the contact page or use the quote form below.
  2. Enter the flight number, the arrival time, the number of passengers and the amount of luggage.
  3. Add the Barcelona address, or the ship and the boarding day for the cruise port.
  4. Say whether you need a return, and when.
  5. I reply by e-mail or WhatsApp with the vehicle I suggest and a quote that includes VAT.

If your plans are not final, send what you know and say what is open. I would rather quote with a note that the time may change than guess.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Girona airport to Barcelona?

Aena lists bus, taxi and car as the ways to reach Girona-Costa Brava airport, and its bus page names Sagalés lines to Barcelona. A single traveller can use the scheduled bus. A group with luggage is better served by a private Sprinter, minibus or coach that goes from the terminal to the Barcelona address.

Is there a direct bus from Girona airport to Barcelona?

Yes. Aena's bus page lists a Sagalés line to Barcelona Estació del Nord and another to Barcelona airport terminals 1 and 2. Timetables and tickets are on the operator's site, and I do not run a timetabled service. I run private transfers for groups.

How far is Girona airport from Barcelona?

It is 97 km from Girona-Costa Brava airport to Plaça de Catalunya, about 1 h 20 min without traffic. Barcelona's own airport is a separate place and is not on this route.

How much is a private transfer from Girona airport to Barcelona?

It is quoted on request, VAT included, because the price depends on the vehicle, the date, the time and whether you need a return. I do not give a figure without those details, and I do not publish a from price.

Can a coach for 50 people collect a group at Girona airport?

Yes. The coach seats up to 60 passengers. Send me the flight, the number of people, the luggage and the Barcelona address through the form and I quote the transfer.

Can I go from Girona airport to the Barcelona cruise port?

Yes. The cruise port to or from Barcelona is priced like the airport row in my table, but a transfer from Girona airport is not in the table, so I quote it on request. Send the ship's name and the boarding day with the request.

How do I get from Girona airport to Barcelona at night?

My service runs 24/7, so a late landing is not a problem for a booked group. For scheduled buses, ask the operator which departures match your flight, because Aena says the Estació del Nord line leaves about 20 to 25 minutes after each flight arrives.
