Is a Barcelona to Cadaqués minibus worth it for a group?
Yes, if the group wants to arrive together and to decide its own timetable. A private Barcelona to Cadaqués minibus collects everyone at one address, drives the 170 km to the village, waits while the group walks, eats and visits, and brings everyone back at the time you agreed.
Cadaqués is a day trip that groups choose for the village itself and for its link with Salvador Dalí. It is also a long drive, and that is the reason to plan it properly. Send the date and the number of passengers in the quote form below and I reply with the vehicle and the price, and my bus hire Barcelona home page shows the rest of the fleet if you are comparing options.
The rest of this page answers the questions that groups ask before they book: how long the drive is, what the day costs, what the Dalí house at Portlligat asks of a group, how to choose a vehicle and what to prepare.
How far is Cadaqués from Barcelona, and how long does the drive take?
From Plaça de Catalunya in central Barcelona to Cadaqués it is 170 km, about 2 h 15 min without traffic (Google Maps route). That time is free-flow, so it is the best case, not the plan.
I tell groups to allow more on summer weekends and at the start and end of school holidays, and to treat the final approach to the village as the slow part of the drive. The exit from Barcelona in the morning adds time as well. A group with a flight or a ferry on the same evening should say so in the form, because I would then suggest an earlier start or a different plan.
The driver’s hours are not an issue on this trip. European Union rules allow the driver of a Sprinter, a minibus or a coach 9 hours of driving a day, extendable to 10 hours twice a week, with a break of at least 45 minutes no later than after 4.5 hours of driving. The European Commission summarises them and they apply to vehicles with more than nine seats including the driver. A return trip with a comfort stop on the way fits inside them, but a day that adds Figueres and Girona on top gets tight, and I will say so.
How much is a Barcelona to Cadaqués day trip?
For a day trip I count the drive each way plus the time on site. The estimate uses 2 h 15 min each way and 3 hours in Cadaqués, rounded up to the half hour: 7.5 hours of hire. Prices are in euros, include VAT and are for the whole vehicle.
| Vehicle | Seats | Estimate, 7.5 hours of hire |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes V-Class | up to 7 | €590 |
| Mercedes Sprinter minibus | up to 16 | €740 |
| Minibus | up to 33 | €845 |
| Coach | up to 60 | €845 |
Hire by the hour has a 6-hour minimum per day and no maximum, and the 6 hours are already covered by this trip. Each extra hour is charged at the hourly rate: €80 in the V-Class, €90 in the Sprinter and €110 in the minibus and the coach. A full day with the driver at your disposal for 8 hours is €630, €785, €900 and €900 in the same order. The full table is on the prices page.
A one-way transfer to Cadaqués, an overnight stay for the driver or a stay of several days is not on my table, so I quote it on request. I do not publish a “from” price for these, because the date and the plan decide the figure. The minibus and the coach cost the same on this route, which is why a group of 28 may prefer the coach if it has the space for bags.
How do other ways of reaching Cadaqués compare with a private minibus?
Searches for this route compare public transport, so here is a plain summary. I do not quote other operators’ fares or timetables, because they change and they are not mine to state.
- Public bus. Regional operators serve the village. The journey time and the departures are set by the operator, and a group boards together on the services that are running that day.
- Train. For rail connections and current services, look at Renfe. Check whether the rail journey ends at the village or whether a road connection follows, because that decides how many times the group has to change.
- Taxi. Possible, but a long run for a vehicle that seats four, and a group would need several cars.
- Private minibus or coach. The group leaves from the hotel, arrives together and the driver waits.
The difference is not mainly price. For a group of 14 or 30 the question is who coordinates the tickets, the transfers at each end and the return. A private vehicle replaces that coordination with one booking.
What should a group know about the Dalí house at Portlligat?
If the group wants to see the house, treat it as the fixed point of the day, because the visit is organised in small groups. The Dalí Foundation’s access conditions page states that visits are made in small groups that enter every 10 minutes from the opening time, that booking in advance is always required and that tickets must be collected half an hour before the visit.
Other points from the Foundation’s pages that matter to a group:
- The visit is not guided, but staff accompany visitors through the interior, and any guided tour needs the museum’s prior approval.
- Medium and large bags, luggage and backpacks are not allowed, and strollers may be restricted.
- Visitors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
- The page states that it is impossible to enter the house in a wheelchair.
- The house is open on a seasonal calendar, with different hours in summer and a closing period in winter, so read the current calendar when you choose the date.
Because the house takes small groups at set intervals, a party of 30 should talk to the Foundation before fixing the day. The Dalí Foundation main page lists the Portlligat house with the Theatre-Museum in Figueres and the Gala Dalí Castle in Púbol, and gives the reservation contact. I do not book tickets, and I do not state ticket prices.
Once you have the slot, I plan the bus around it. The vehicle drops the group, I agree the time for the return and the driver waits.
Can a group combine Cadaqués with Figueres and the Dalí Theatre-Museum?
It is possible, but it is a long day, and I would not promise it without seeing the plan. The Theatre-Museum in Figueres is 138 km from Barcelona, about 1 h 40 min, and the Figueres page covers its group rules.
If the group wants both, the realistic shapes are:
- Two days, one night. Figueres on the first day, Cadaqués on the second. This is the plan I would suggest to an art group.
- One long day, one Dalí site. Choose the Theatre-Museum or the Portlligat house and spend the rest of the time on the village or the coast.
- Figueres first, village after lunch. Only for a group that is happy to be on the road for most of the day.
Each extra stop adds hours, and the hours are what I charge. Tell me what the group wants and I count them honestly. A day that ends with a deadline in Barcelona is a risk I flag when I read the plan.
What is there to do in Cadaqués and around Cap de Creus?
The village is the main destination: the old town on foot, the harbour, lunch and the sea. Groups usually spend the three hours of the estimate on a walk, a meal and a photo stop, and they split into those who walk and those who sit.
The area around the village is a protected landscape. The Catalan government’s page for the Cap de Creus Natural Park describes it as a place between land and sea, shaped by the tramuntana wind, and asks visitors to follow the access recommendations for protected natural areas. The page carries a notice on restrictions, and the village’s official tourism site has a banner pointing to the park’s access page with a vehicle-related notice. I do not state what is allowed for a coach or a minibus, so read those pages before you promise the group a visit.
The Costa Brava tourism board lists Cadaqués among its highlights on the Costa Brava site, together with the Dalí connection. For the rest of the coast and for other stops on the same day, the Costa Brava bus hire page covers the options.
Which vehicle should a group choose for Cadaqués?
Choose by head count first and by the final approach second. The long motorway part of the drive suits any vehicle. The village is a place where a smaller vehicle is easier to park and to drop off, which is why I treat the drop-off point as the first thing to confirm.
- Up to 7: the V-Class, for a family or a small art group, door to door.
- Up to 16: the Sprinter, the practical choice for friends or a guided group.
- Up to 33: the minibus, for a class, a club or a large family.
- Up to 60: the coach, for a tour party, with a drop-off agreed in advance.
For a group of up to 16, the Mercedes Sprinter is the practical choice. A group of 20 to 33 fits the 30-seater minibus, and I tell you if a coach would need a different drop-off point.
What should I prepare before the day?
Preparation decides whether the three hours in the village are three hours or two. These are the things I ask groups to fix before the day.
- The lunch booking. Harbour restaurants fill early in summer, so reserve for the whole group and tell me the time. I can time the arrival to match it.
- The meeting point. One clear spot for the return, repeated to the group before they leave the vehicle.
- The head count. The same number on the way out and on the way back, with one named leader.
- The Portlligat slot. If the group wants the house, the reservation comes first.
- Mobility. Anyone who uses a wheelchair or walks slowly, so I choose the drop-off close to the start of the walk.
On a drive of this length I suggest one short break on the way out if the group includes children or older guests. I agree it with you before the day so nobody is hurrying.
What if the weather or the season changes the plan?
In summer the village is busy, parking for larger vehicles is limited and the drop-off point is the first thing I confirm. Outside the high season it is quieter and the road is easier. If it rains or the wind picks up, I keep in touch with you by phone or WhatsApp and adjust the pick-up. The service runs 24/7, so an early departure or a late return does not need a different price structure in the table, although extra hours are counted.
For a group that arrives at Barcelona airport and wants to go straight north, tell me the flight and I include the airport leg in the quote. The airport bus hire page explains how group pick-ups work.
