How do you get from Barcelona airport to PortAventura with a group?

The simplest way for a group is one private vehicle from the terminal to the hotel. Barcelona airport to PortAventura is 100 km and takes about 1 h 20 min without traffic, from Barcelona-El Prat airport to PortAventura World, and you can check the route on Google Maps.

Send the date, the flight and the hotel in the quote form and I reply with the vehicle and the price. The service runs 24/7, so an early or late flight does not need a different arrangement. My home page on bus hire in Barcelona shows the whole fleet.

Most searches for this route are really about Salou and the park hotels, because that is where the groups sleep. The people behind them are families, school and youth parties, and big groups that want one booking and one drop-off. One vehicle takes the party and its luggage from the arrivals door to the hotel without a change of transport in the middle of the journey, which is the part that tires a group most.

How far is Barcelona airport from PortAventura, and how long does it take?

The distance is 100 km to PortAventura World, and the drive takes about 1 h 20 min without traffic. PortAventura itself describes the trip from El Prat in a shorter way: its how to get there page says you can reach the resort in 1 hour from any terminal at El Prat, and it says the resort is reached directly from the A-7. My figure is the free-flow drive time that I use for planning, and I add margin for a group.

What adds time in practice:

  • leaving the airport area at busy hours, and the roads around Barcelona on Friday afternoons and at the start and end of school holidays
  • a comfort stop, which a full coach usually needs
  • the last stretch to the hotel, where the vehicle may queue at the entrance
  • a late check-in, which is a question for the hotel, not the road

For a group I count about an hour and a half from the kerb at the airport to the hotel door, and I suggest that you do not book a dinner reservation or a pool session for the minute you expect to arrive.

Do the driving-time rules affect this transfer?

On their own, no. The European Commission sets a break of at least 45 minutes after 4½ hours of driving, a daily driving limit of 9 hours (10 hours twice a week) and a daily rest of at least 11 hours, with exceptions. According to Your Europe, the rules apply to a bus or coach with 10 or more seats including the driver, so they cover the Sprinter, the minibus and the coach, not the V-Class. The airport run fits comfortably. A day that adds a morning in Barcelona, the transfer, an evening at the park and a late return is another matter, and I plan it with you.

What is the closest airport to PortAventura?

Reus airport is the closest. PortAventura’s own page says you can get to the resort in just 15 minutes from Reus airport, against about an hour from El Prat. That is why a family may ask whether it should fly to Reus instead.

The answer is usually the flights. Barcelona has a wider choice of routes and dates, and many groups choose it for that reason and then drive south. If your group flies into Reus, my page on Reus airport to Barcelona covers the opposite direction, and I can quote a transfer from Reus to your hotel on request.

Is there a bus from Barcelona airport to PortAventura?

Yes, run by another company. PortAventura names Plana as the operator of a regular bus service from Barcelona airport with several stops in the area, and Plana also runs a daily coastal service that links the towns of the Costa Daurada with the park. Aena’s page on how to reach Barcelona airport by bus lists the Plana line from La Granadella through Tarragona to Barcelona, stopping in several towns including Salou and PortAventura. It lists the stops for this line at Terminal 1 arrivals, and no stop at Terminal 2. Aena gives no frequencies and sends travellers to the operator, so I do not quote times.

That matters for a group that lands at Terminal 2: the group would need to reach the Terminal 1 stop first. A scheduled bus is a reasonable choice for a couple or a small party with light bags who match a departure. For a party of 30 with suitcases and pushchairs, it has the usual limits: fixed departures, one ticket each, shared luggage space and a walk from the stop to the hotel.

Can you go by train from Barcelona airport to PortAventura?

Yes, with a change. PortAventura says the resort has a PortAventura World stop on the R-17 and RT2 lines of Rodalies de Catalunya, and that trains from outside Catalonia reach the Camp de Tarragona station, from which the Plana bus line L4, a taxi from the official rank or a rental car continues. Aena lists the local train line R2 Nord among the ways to reach the airport.

I do not describe the connection between those lines or give times, because the operators change them and the official page tells you to check the timetables before you travel. For a family with cabin bags it can work. For a group of 20 with cases, I see three problems: bags carried through stations, a headcount at each change, and a train that may not match the time the hotel lets you in.

How much does a taxi from Barcelona airport to Salou cost?

I do not give a taxi fare, because the price of a taxi depends on the meter, supplements and the time, and a figure copied from a blog would be a guess. PortAventura says taxis wait at the official rank outside the station, and that is where a local taxi for the last stretch from a train starts.

A taxi suits up to four people. A family of seven needs two, and a party of 15 needs four, with four drivers and four drop-offs to explain. The AMB taxi page is the place to start if you want the regulated taxi service in the Barcelona area. For a group, one vehicle is simpler.

Here is how the main options compare:

Option Suits Watch for
Plana bus from the airport Couples, small parties, light bags Terminal 1 arrivals stop only on Aena’s list, fixed departures
Train with a change Families with cabin bags Bags carried between stations, no door-to-door
Taxi Up to four people Several cars for any larger party
Private Sprinter, minibus or coach Eight or more, schools, large families Needs a booking and a quote in advance

Which PortAventura hotel and where does the vehicle stop?

The vehicle goes where you tell me, and for this trip the hotel name is the key detail. PortAventura World lists its own hotels, including Gold River, El Paso, Caribe, PortAventura, Colorado Creek and Mansion de Lucy, and also links to other hotels in the area. A group staying at one of them should tell me the exact name, because a hotel-by-hotel drop-off point for a coach is something the hotel and I agree, not a guess from a map.

If you are staying in Salou rather than in the park, send the hotel address. Salou is one of the destinations that the PortAventura site lists beside the resort, and I quote Salou transfers on request in the same way, by vehicle and not by seat.

Ask the hotel two things before the day, and pass me the answers:

  1. Where can a coach stop to unload, and is there a better entrance than the main one?
  2. What is the check-in time, and can the group leave the bags if the rooms are not ready?

Can a group go straight from the airport to the park?

Yes, if the plan makes sense. PortAventura World lists three parks on its site: PortAventura Park, Ferrari Land and Caribe Aquatic Park. A group that lands in the morning may want to leave the bags at the hotel and go on to a park in the afternoon. I can plan a vehicle for that with the hourly rates, and the vehicle can wait or return at the time you choose.

Opening calendars and tickets are set by the resort, not by me, so I do not repeat dates here. Check the official site before you fix a date, because a closed day changes the plan more than any traffic.

How much does a private Barcelona airport to PortAventura transfer cost?

It is quoted on request, VAT included, for the whole vehicle and not per person. The route is not in my fixed table, so I do not publish a figure, and I do not mix an hourly rate with a transfer price.

The quote depends on four things:

  1. the vehicle
  2. the date and the time of the pick-up
  3. one way or return
  4. the hotel or address

The rows I can state are for other jobs. The airport to or from Barcelona is €80 in the V-Class, €200 in the Sprinter and €320 in the minibus and in the coach. A driver at your disposal for 6 hours costs €470, €610, €685 and €685, with each additional hour at €80, €90, €110 and €110. They matter if the vehicle stays with the group for a day around the park. The price page shows the whole table.

Which vehicle should the group take?

The vehicle follows the seat count and the luggage.

  • Up to 7 people: the V-Class, for a family or a small party.
  • 8 to 16 people: the Sprinter minibus, up to 16 passengers. The Sprinter page has the details.
  • 17 to 33 people: the minibus, up to 33 passengers. See the 30-seater minibus page.
  • 34 to 60 people: the coach, up to 60 passengers. See the 50-seater coach page.

Families travelling to a theme park bring pushchairs, large cases and sports bags, so an honest bag count matters more here than on a business transfer. If in doubt, go up one size.

What do school and youth groups need to plan?

School and youth tours are a large share of the traffic to a theme park. Teachers prefer one arrival with the whole class in one vehicle, because the roll-call is simpler and nobody is lost between a station and a hotel. A year group often fits in one or two vehicles, and a minibus or a coach carries more than a scheduled bus can promise for a party of that size.

Send the leader’s name, the number of adults and the number of pupils, and say if any pupils need extra time getting on and off. My page on school and sports team bus hire explains how I handle these bookings. For the return flight I plan the departure from the hotel with a safe margin and never at the last minute. If the group starts in the city instead of at the airport, Barcelona to PortAventura by bus is the matching page, and for the nearby city, see Barcelona airport to Tarragona.

Is PortAventura worth visiting with a group?

It is worth it if the group wants rides, shows and a water park in one place. The official site describes PortAventura Park with 40 attractions and daily shows, Ferrari Land as a park dedicated to the Italian racing team, and Caribe Aquatic Park as a water park. For a mixed group, with some who want thrill rides and others who want the pool, having three parks in one resort makes planning easier.

Prices, opening hours and events change by season, and I do not repeat them. The booking is simple from my side: you decide the days, and I move the group.
